Ready for Microblading/ Scalp Micropigmentation? Read this FAQ With Our In-House Expert First.

Scalp micropigmentation (for the hairline) and microblading (for the brows) are similar processes, but each one has their own nuance and purpose. We asked our resident staff expert and certified scalp micropigmentation and microblading artist, Terry Sotelo, to give us the down low on what to expect as well as what she loves about the procedures.
Let’s start with micropigmentation (for the scalp). Who is it intended for?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive treatment that uses fine micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny follicles that help thicken and restore the look of fuller hair.
Micropigmentation treatment can restore receded hairlines, thicken remaining hair, camouflage transplant scarring, and create the look of close-cropped hair. It’s also effective for those suffering from just a little minor hair thinning or recession.
How does it work?
By accurately replicating your own natural hair follicles and hair color, scalp micropigmentation can help strengthen and add density to thinning areas, creating an undetectable illusion of thicker, stronger hair.
One of the greatest things about the innovative scalp micropigmentation treatment is that it requires little to no continued maintenance and carries no strict lifestyle requirements or daily restrictions.
What do you like about it?
One of the reasons I started doing this is that you can make a real difference in the self-esteem of clients dealing with hair loss, which can be really devastating.
It’s something that really enhances facial features for men and women who suffer from any kind of hair loss. It’s a very natural-looking way of bringing back a sense of volume around the face.
Having someone tell me “you changed my life, or you’ve taken 10 years off my face” that’s a pretty nice feeling. I have people come in with scarring or alopecia, it’s such a great way also to address anyone who has had hair loss for health reasons.
What kind of skill level does it require?
You really need to be detail-oriented and very patient to do this kind of work. I’m essentially creating a 3-D effect with a technique called shading – which is a combination of actual drawn hair strokes and blurred areas to create fullness and add texture. I’ve always been very interested in this kind of technique. My experience with cosmetics and that kind of artistry translates well because I know what I’m looking at and what I’ll be creating.
What is microblading?
Microblading is a safe, non-invasive procedure that produces semi-permanent results. It gives eyebrows the effect of ultra-fine delicate hair that blends seamlessly and mimics your natural brow hair along the brow bone.
How do you use microblading to enhance eyebrows?
I work with the landscape of your brow – be it too short, thin, patchy or sparse – reviving the basic shape. And if your brows are completely gone, I’ll recreate an entirely new brow.  It makes such a difference once I get that correct eyebrow shape for women especially, the eyebrow is a very important framing feature for the face.
What does the treatment procedure look like?
The first hour we’ll spend mapping out the perfect shape, and at that time I’ll be analyzing your face shape and coloring. Then, I pre-draw your new eyebrow using a brow pencil. This helps me make sure the best colors and hair follicle styles are chosen so the end result is exactly what you want. Finally, I’ll fill in that template with our custom mixed specialized pigments. No one person’s brows are the same.
Does it hurt? And how long does it last?
With any procedure, client comfort is the most important, so numbing agents are applied prior to and during the treatment process. Your appointment will take around three hours to complete and the results last up to a year.
