Your skin is the body’s largest organ and taking care of it goes far beyond choosing the right moisturizer. National Skin Care Awareness Month is a great reminder to prioritize your skin care routine, establish healthy daily habits and understand when your skin may need professional attention. Your skin is like a car’s odometer – it records all the damage and you can’t turn it back!
Whether you’re dealing with specific skin concerns such as acne, dryness, signs of aging, pigmentation or simply want to be preventative, a consistent skincare routine can make a meaningful difference.
Start With the Basics
You don’t need a complicated 10-step routine to have healthy skin. In fact, a simple, consistent routine is often the best place to start.
1. Wear Sunscreen Every Day
One of the most important things you can do for your skin is protect it from the sun. Daily UV exposure contributes to premature skin aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and loss of skin elasticity. More importantly, UV exposure is the major risk factor for skin cancer.
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it every morning, even on cloudy days or when you don’t plan to spend much time outdoors. You still get about 80% of UV exposure on a cloudy day as you would on a sunny day. If you’re outside for extended periods, remember to reapply every 2-3 hours.
2. Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Healthy skin needs moisture. Using a moisturizer suited to your skin type can help support the skin barrier and prevent dryness and irritation.
If your skin is oily or acne-prone, look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. If your skin is dry or sensitive, a more hydrating moisturizer containing ingredients such as ceramides or hyaluronic acid can be beneficial.
3. Cleanse Gently
Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, sunscreen and environmental buildup from your skin. However, harsh cleansers or aggressive scrubbing can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to irritation.
Choose a gentle cleanser appropriate for your skin type and avoid over-cleansing. Your skin should feel clean, not tight, dry or uncomfortable after washing.
4. Be Consistent With Your Routine
Maintaining healthy skin is a marathon not a sprint! Skincare isn’t usually about overnight results. Many products and treatments require consistent use over time to produce noticeable improvements.
Rather than constantly switching products, give your routine time to work. If you’re introducing active ingredients such as retinoids, exfoliating acids or Vitamin C, introduce them gradually and pay attention to how your skin responds.
Know What Your Skin Is Trying to Tell You
Changes in your skin can sometimes be more than a cosmetic concern. Persistent acne, unexplained rashes, hair loss, changing moles, new growths, scaly spots, persistent itching or changes in pigmentation may warrant an evaluation by a dermatologist. Skin changes can be a manifestation of internal or systemic disease.
Regular skin checks are also an important part of maintaining your overall skin health. If you notice anything new, a spot that is changing in size, shape or color, or a lesion that is bleeding spontaneously or doesn’t heal, don’t wait and schedule an appointment with a dermatology professional! The difference between life and death due to a melanoma can be the thickness of a credit card. Everybody needs an annual full body skin cancer screening and mole check.
Professional Skincare Can Take Your Routine Further
At-home skincare is an important foundation, but professional guidance can help you create a routine that’s specifically suited to your skin and concerns.
A dermatologist can evaluate your skin, recommend medical-grade or prescription products when appropriate, diagnose underlying conditions and discuss in-office treatments to help address your specific skin concerns.
The right approach isn’t necessarily about doing more—it’s about doing what’s right for your skin.
