As temperatures drop, your skin may need a little extra attention. Cooler weather, lower humidity, and indoor heating can leave skin feeling dry, tight, or more sensitive than usual. Even if your summer skincare routine worked beautifully, a few thoughtful adjustments can help keep your skin hydrated, comfortable, and healthy throughout the winter months.
At North Dallas Dermatology Associates, we’re sharing five simple ways to transition your skincare routine from fall to winter.
5 Ways to Update Your Skincare Routine for Winter
1. Upgrade Your Moisturizer
Colder weather and lower humidity can increase water loss from the skin, making a good moisturizer especially important. Look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid to help maintain hydration and support your skin’s protective barrier.
One of my favorite options for the colder months is Skinfix Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream, which contains barrier-supporting lipids, including ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. It’s especially helpful when skin starts feeling dry or uncomfortable.
Derm tip: Apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp to help lock in hydration.
2. Choose a Gentle Cleanser
Harsh cleansers and excessive washing can leave skin feeling stripped and irritated, particularly during the winter months. Choose a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup without disrupting your skin barrier.
Creamy or hydrating cleansers can be especially helpful if your skin tends to feel tight after washing. And remember, your skin shouldn’t feel squeaky clean after cleansing. That tight sensation can be a sign that you’ve removed too much of its natural oil.
If you’re experiencing increased dryness, consider simplifying your routine rather than adding more products.
3. Add a Hydrating, Multitasking Serum
One of the easiest ways to give your winter skincare routine a boost is by incorporating a well-formulated serum that does more than just hydrate.
Serum 6 by Maei MD is one of my favorite products to recommend because it combines six categories of skincare ingredients in a single, streamlined formula. It features multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide to support the skin barrier, peptides, a vitamin C derivative for antioxidant support, plant-derived stem cell extracts, and probiotic ingredients.
Rather than layering multiple serums, Serum 6 helps simplify your routine while addressing several common skin concerns, including dehydration, dullness, and the appearance of fine lines.
For skin that needs additional moisture during the colder months, I especially like pairing Serum 6 with Skinfix Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream. The serum delivers hydrating and supportive ingredients, while the moisturizer helps reduce moisture loss and reinforce the skin barrier.
Derm tip: Apply your serum first, followed by moisturizer, to help keep skin hydrated and comfortable throughout the day.
4. Keep Sunscreen in Your Daily Routine
Sunscreen isn’t just for summer! UV exposure occurs year-round, even on cloudy days. UVA rays, which contribute to premature skin aging and pigmentation, can also penetrate window glass.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning to help protect against skin cancer, sun damage, and premature skin aging.
At North Dallas Dermatology Associates, we carry EltaMD sunscreens and other carefully selected skincare products to help you maintain consistent sun protection throughout the year.
And remember, the best sunscreen is one you’ll actually enjoy wearing every day.
5. Don’t Overdo Exfoliation
While exfoliation can improve the appearance of dullness and uneven texture, too much can lead to irritation, redness, and flaking, especially when your skin is already struggling with seasonal dryness.
If you use exfoliating acids or retinoids, pay attention to how your skin responds as the weather changes. You may find that reducing the frequency of exfoliation or adding a richer moisturizer is all you need.
You don’t necessarily need to stop using your favorite active ingredients in winter. The key is adjusting your routine based on what your skin can comfortably tolerate.
Derm tip: More exfoliation doesn’t always mean better results. Consistency and a healthy skin barrier are much more important than aggressive treatments.
Don’t Forget Your Lips and Body
Your face isn’t the only area affected by colder weather. Lips, hands, and the rest of your body can also become dry and uncomfortable.
Keep a nourishing lip balm handy, moisturize your hands after washing, and apply body lotion or cream immediately after bathing while your skin is still slightly damp.
Avoid excessively hot showers, which can worsen dryness, and consider using a humidifier if indoor heating leaves the air particularly dry.
Small, consistent habits can make a noticeable difference in how your skin looks and feels throughout the season.
Give Your Skin a Seasonal Refresh
Healthy winter skin doesn’t require an entirely new skincare routine. Often, a few thoughtful changes are enough to keep your skin hydrated, comfortable, and protected.
My approach is always to focus on well-formulated, multitasking products rather than adding unnecessary steps. A simple routine built around gentle cleansing, Serum 6 by Maei MD, a barrier-supporting moisturizer like Skinfix Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream, and daily sunscreen can be an excellent foundation for healthy skin throughout the colder months.
