Hyperpigmentation Hot Spots & How to Prevent Them

North Dallas - Hyperpigmentation

Uneven skin tone? You’re not alone. Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns and one of the most frustrating. It happens when the skin produces excess melanin, leading to dark patches, sun spots, or discoloration after acne or inflammation.

It can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, heat, or even certain medications. While it’s more common in melanin-rich skin tones, it can affect all skin types.

How to prevent hyperpigmentation:

  • Wear Sunscreen Daily: UV exposure is the biggest trigger. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, even if you’re indoors or it’s cloudy.
  • Use Brightening Ingredients: Look for products with vitamin C and niacinamide to help prevent and fade spots.
  • Exfoliate Gently: Chemical exfoliants like AHAs or retinoids can help improve skin tone by speeding up cell turnover. Always follow with SPF.
  • Watch for Heat & Hormones: Heat (even from workouts or hot showers) and hormonal changes can make pigmentation worse, especially in those prone to melasma.
