Melanoma Awareness Month

May is Melanoma Awareness Month—a time to focus on prevention, early detection, and education around one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer. With skin cancer rates on the rise, public awareness is more important than ever.

Teddi Mellencamp, former star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, has been open about her experience with melanoma. In 2022, she revealed she had been diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma and has since undergone multiple treatments. Mellencamp continues to use her platform to encourage others to take skin health seriously.

Her message is clear: regular dermatologist visits and sun protection can save lives. By sharing her story, she reminds us that melanoma can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.

Sun Safety Tips:

  1. Use Sunscreen Daily – Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.
  2. Wear Protective Clothing – Wide brimmed hats, sunglasses, and UPF-rated clothing add an extra layer of defense.
  3. Seek Shade – Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Check the UV index before heading out!
  4. Avoid Tanning Beds – UV exposure from tanning beds significantly increases melanoma risk.
  5. Check Your Skin – Monitor moles for changes. Use the ABCDE method (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving) and see a dermatologist annually.

Teddi Mellencamp’s story is a powerful reminder to stay vigilant. Melanoma can be treatable when caught early, but prevention is the first line of defense.

This May, take a moment to assess your sun safety habits and encourage others to do the same.
