Regaining Lost Facial Volume with Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are consistently some of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. With all of the dermal fillers out there and the various benefits they offer, you can turn to fillers for minimally invasive solutions to the most common signs of aging.

At North Dallas Dermatology Associates, we offer dermal filler injections to help you regain lost facial volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Learn more about the types of dermal fillers available and how they can help.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectables that can help plump up the injection sites, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and giving you a more youthful facial contour.

In your youth, two important proteins play a crucial role in keeping your skin looking smooth and firm. These proteins are collagen and elastin. As you enter your 30s, however, the production of these proteins decreases, leading to skin that’s not as firm and hydrated as it used to be. That’s when wrinkles and fine lines can start to form. At the same time, you can start losing facial fullness, which makes creases even more prominent. Dermal filler injections can help with all of these signs of aging.

Some of the most common reasons people turn to dermal fillers are:

  • Adding volume to lax skin
  • Smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
  • Making the face more symmetrical
  • Adding volume to lips and cheeks

There are many types of dermal fillers, and one of the most popular is made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your skin’s connective tissues that work to keep your skin hydrated and firm. Some of the most famous brands of hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvéderm and Restylane.

Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers are another option. These fillers work best for contouring the jaw, adding volume to cheeks, and treating deep folds and wrinkles. Radiesse is an example of this type of filler.

Permanent soft tissue fillers like Bellafill are yet another option. These fillers are best suited for treating creases around your mouth.

Poly-L-lactic acid fillers are an additional option, with brands like Sculptra leading the way. These fillers can help restore facial volume while also stimulating your body to create more collagen.

Candidates for Dermal Fillers

The best candidates for dermal fillers are people who are in good physical and mental health, who have realistic expectations, and who have mild to moderate wrinkles and creases. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition that impedes healing, have serious health conditions, are allergic to the ingredients in the fillers, or have unrealistic expectations, you may not be a good candidate for dermal fillers.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are minimally invasive procedures that don’t require any downtime. You can get right back to your regular activities after receiving the injections. Dermal fillers also offer almost immediate results. Within a day or two, you can start seeing diminished wrinkles and an increase in volume at the injection sites. Dermal fillers usually last a long time, and some types offer results for up to a year. You can also combine dermal fillers with neurotoxins and other cosmetic procedures to enhance the results.

How to Prepare for Dermal Fillers

When you schedule a consultation with us, we will assess the treatment area to make sure that this is the best choice for you. We will also get your full medical history and a list of the medications and supplements you take. If you have had previous experiences with dermal fillers or neurotoxins, let us know about them. To prepare for dermal filler injections, you should stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, St. John’s Wort, and vitamin E. You also want to avoid drinking alcohol a couple of days before the injections to ensure that the healing goes smoothly.

In addition, avoid anything that makes your skin more sensitive, including acid-based skin care products, facials, chemical peels, and sun exposure. You want to skip bleaching, waxing, or plucking in the treatment areas.

What Is the Procedure Like?

On the day of the injections, you should arrive at our clinic without wearing makeup, lotions, or creams on your face. We will clean your face and then apply a topical numbing agent if that’s something you want. The entire procedure will likely take just a few minutes, and you are then free to return to your day.

It can be a good idea to apply an ice pack to the injection sites throughout the day. Don’t massage, rub, or scratch the injection sites, and make sure to stay away from intense heat sources like hot tubs, saunas, and even the sun. After at least six hours, you can apply makeup and use gentle facial cleansers.

You can expect to start seeing results in a day or two. These fillers continue to deliver results for six months up to a year.
