Microneedling Benefits: What to Expect

Microneedling is a treatment option proven to help with a variety of skin issues that can affect how you look. Microneedling treatments are effective at boosting collagen and elastin production, letting your skin heal itself in a natural manner.

At North Dallas Dermatology Associates, we offer a type of microneedling treatment that includes radiofrequency energy. Learn more about this option and what benefits it can offer you.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling treatments are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that stimulate collagen and elastin production to help with certain skin conditions.

Collagen and elastin are proteins found throughout your body and serve many purposes, including keeping your skin firm and at a proper level of hydration. After your 20s, your natural production of these proteins decreases, and this leads to skin that’s not as firm as it once was and that can develop wrinkles and fine lines more easily.

Microneedling helps boost your collagen and elastin production by using small needles to create tiny punctures. These punctures jumpstart your wound-healing process and encourage your skin to heal itself through a process called dermal remodeling.

Microneedling can help:

  • Diminish the appearance of scars
  • Diminish fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce enlarged pores
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Smooth uneven skin tone
  • Reduce the appearance of stretch marks
  • Improve skin elasticity

At our center, we combine traditional microneedling with radiofrequency technology. During this treatment, the needles release radiofrequency into the wounds they made, enhancing the effects of the microneedling procedure.

The best candidates for radiofrequency microneedling and traditional microneedling are in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the results.

If you are on Accutane, have a skin infection, have skin diseases like psoriasis, are receiving chemotherapy or radiation, are taking anticoagulants, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a history of poor wound healing, this may not be the best treatment option.

Top Microneedling Benefits

There are many microneedling benefits to consider. One of them is that it’s a minimally invasive treatment, so you don’t have to worry about long recovery times.

Perhaps the most important microneedling benefit is that it stimulates collagen and elastin production. This boost can help treat many conditions because it promotes your body’s regenerative process.

With radiofrequency microneedling, you can get more dramatic results because of the added energy waves. They stimulate the wound-healing process even more.

Before Your Microneedling Treatment

The first thing that you have to do if you think you can benefit from microneedling is to schedule a consultation with our team. We will assess the treatment area and put together a plan that fits your schedule and lifestyle.

We will ask for your full medical history and make a note of any medications you take. Let us know about supplements, too.

You should stop taking medications like ibuprofen and aspirin before the procedure, and we also require that at least six months have passed since your last Accutane treatment. Avoid supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, and St. John’s Wort as well.

We suggest that you avoid abrasive skincare routines, exfoliants, topical antibiotics, and acids at least 48 hours before your procedure. Five days before the treatment, avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds.

You also want to avoid laser hair treatments, waxing, and hair removal creams for at least two weeks before the microneedling treatment. Don’t get Botox or fillers for two weeks before the procedure.

At least 24 hours before your appointment, stop drinking alcohol.

The Microneedling Procedure and Aftercare

Come to the appointment with a clean face and without wearing any makeup or lotions. We can also wash your face for you to ensure that it’s free of germs. We will then apply a numbing cream and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before beginning the microneedling treatment.

Once we finish, you are free to return to your daily life.

During the recovery process, you want to avoid direct and unprotected sun exposure for at least two weeks. We will recommend the right hydrating creams, especially those that are rich in antioxidants. You should also drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Do not wear makeup for at least 24 hours after the session and avoid strenuous exercise for at least three days to keep from sweating. That also means avoiding saunas, spas, and hot baths. Don’t undergo other cosmetic treatments for at least two weeks.

Since caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you, you may want to avoid these as you recover.

You can start seeing results within a week. In the following three to four weeks, collagen production in the treated areas will increase.

For people who want to diminish early signs of aging, one to three sessions over a few months can be enough. For scarring or more severe concerns, you may need three to six treatment sessions.

You can undergo the microneedling procedure every four to six weeks, so you can book refresher sessions throughout the year.
