We all know that smoking kills, but it doesn’t just affect your body internally. Smoking does a world of damage on your appearance that can add years to your looks. Here are eight ways that smoking affects your looks in a drastic way.
Sagging Skin – The appearance of loose skin around your eyes is typical for smoker. Due more than 4, 000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, smokers are also faced with sagging skin and deeper wrinkles due to the chemical breakdown of elasticity and collagen
Harsh Wrinkles – A telltale sign of a smoker is usually the vertical wrinkles around lip lines that come with years of smoking. Why does smoking cause wrinkles? Because smoking harbors the blood supply to the skin that prevents it from looking supple and healthy.
Loss of Glow – Smokers usually suffer from discoloration and blotchy skin tones from the body being deprived of oxygen. People who smoke tend to have ashier appearing skin that no longer holds that youthful glow.
Age Spots – Smokers are more susceptible to age spots, which are blotches of darker spots around the hands and face.
Hair loss – Experts say that the hair loss due to smoking is because of harsh toxins in the smoke that damage the DNA follicles within our hair. The end result is that smokers have thinner, grayer hair, than nonsmokers.
Stained fingernails – The nicotine in cigarettes is notorious for staining your fingernails a yellowish brown color. There are ways to get rid of the discoloration, my favorite of which is to put down the cigarettes.
Dental damage – Smoking not only causes yellow teeth due to the nicotine in cigarettes, but it can also lead to oral cancer, gum decay, and a slew of other unfortunate mouth issues.
Psoriasis – Smokers are also more susceptible to developing psoriasis which is a condition that causes thick, scaly patches on the skin. Experts say that smokers double their chance of developing psoriasis than nonsmokers.
The best thing that you can do for your skin and health in general is to stop smoking today! Talk to your doctor about what your options are to quit smoking and get on the right track to a healthier life.
