“My care philosophy is a team approach to skin health. By that, I mean that I value working together with my patients in order to come up with a plan that best suits their needs, lifestyle, and overall health. My specialty is skin signs of internal illness, and because of this, I value that the skin can be a window to what is going on internally. I find that patients have great instincts about their health and a careful dialogue about their observations regarding their skin disease leads to more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Skin disease can be painful, both physically and emotionally, and it is my goal to work together with my patients in order to alleviate this pain. I truly value the relationships that I am fortunate enough to make with my patients as we proceed on our journey together toward both good skin health and overall wellness.”
I really enjoyed working with Dr. Hurley when she was a resident at UT Southwestern. When I left the faculty there, I called her to ask if I could join her practice. She welcomed me with open arms, making me feel part of the NDDA family immediately. Since that time she has brought on 5 other amazing women to the NDDA practice. I love the women I work with and I couldn’t imagine practicing dermatology without them.

I have been a patient of Dr. Melissa Costner, at North Dallas Dermatology, since 2013. In addition, I have seen other clinicians in practice.
I have never experienced a more full range of excellence in patient care at any doctor’s office/practice.
Finely tuned reception and administrative process: From the moment you check in to the front desk until checking out; the staff engages with the goal of ensuring that all details related to the processing of the appointment are executed with professionalism and genuine warmth. Best administrative staff!
My doctor, Melissa Costner, is an exceptional person – the icing on the cake given her educational background, clinical experience, and expertise in all things skin. After multiple attempts in consulting several dermatologists – who assessed my chronic/reoccurring skin issue(s) as benign; She had the keen sense and trained eye to do a biopsy. Not only had multiple doctors missed the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma on my shin, but they also misdiagnosed my discoid lupus lesions. It can be tricky, but it’s absolutely critical to promptly, correctly identify these serious skin conditions toward appropriate treatment.
Dr. Costner took the time and care to call me, after office hours, to explain the pathology results of my biopsy, and to reassure me regarding the efficacy of her suggested treatment options. She’s an emotionally available physician. She has a confident, relaxed, encouraging bedside manner and spirit. She asks. She listens. She teaches. She respects her patient’s knowledge and sense of their own body and engages in a collaborative effort toward a best practices approach.
She has gone above and beyond her own clinical discipline in giving valuable feedback and recommendations that regard other health-related concerns. She is driven to establish and maintain an ideal doctor/patient relational dynamic. It’s no surprise that her medical assistants reflect her dedicated spirit of caregiving. They are responsive and kind – consistent in that demeanor, as well. Her assistants are prompt in returning calls, answering questions, and in accommodating/working in appointments whenever it’s necessary. Unfortunately, it’s been my experience more and more, lately, that these kinds of demonstrated and necessary patient advocacy attributes are too frequently missing in medical practices.
The comprehensive level of care demonstrated at North Dallas Dermatology is, in my experience, an exception rather than the rule when considering ‘the busy’ that is the modern doctor’s practice. It’s clearly discernable, in every interaction with the physicians and staff members, that there is a genuine desire to facilitate the very highest level of patient care and trust. I feel extremely fortunate to call Dr. Melissa Costner, and the entire staff at North Dallas Dermatology my clinical advocates.
