Is ThermiVa Right for You?

There are some issues that are harder to discuss than others. For women, being too embarrassed to discuss their sexual wellness and vaginal health can mean sex is painful and unsatisfying, and changes in their intimate appearance can reduce self-confidence. Problems with incontinence can be socially isolating. If you’re struggling with any of these symptoms, call North Dallas Dermatology Associates in Dallas, TX so we can discuss ThermiVa with you.

What Causes Vaginal Changes?

As women age, their vaginas do too. There are many reasons for normal changes to this area of the body, and that’s important to know. Because it’s rarely talked about, women can feel isolated in their symptoms, making them feel even more uncomfortable talking about them. Rest assured, the changes we’re talking about are normal and worth talking about.

Women’s bodies go through enormous changes all throughout their lives, and their vaginas are involved in most of them. The changes that affect vaginal health and function are:

  • Puberty and menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause

Puberty and Menstruation

Most girls get their first period around age 12. From that point until menopause, women’s hormones will fluctuate throughout each month as part of their regular cycle. Hormones signal the ovaries to release an egg into one of the fallopian tubes.

The uterus starts to build up and thicken in preparation for pregnancy. If the egg isn’t fertilized, the lining of the uterus breaks down and flows out through the vagina. This hormone fluctuation happens every month.

Adulthood

During normal menstruation, and before childbirth, a woman’s vagina is at its healthiest. Keep in mind that the word “healthy” means something different to every woman. How thick or thin her vaginal walls are, how much natural lubrication she produces, and even the appearance of the vulva, or the outside of the vagina, varies between women and can have a genetic component. Some of these variations are due to factors like:

Collagen

Collagen is a fibrous protein that makes up about 80% of our skin and connective tissue. We hear about collagen preventing wrinkles on our faces, but it’s also responsible for several attributes of the vagina. Collagen keeps skin, even in the walls of the vagina, plump and smooth. It will keep the walls thick and strong. Collagen works in tandem with elastin.

As we age, we lose collagen production and our skin can become weakened and thinner. This contributes to many vaginal health and aesthetic issues women may want to address, including:

  • Vaginal laxity
  • Changes in the vulva’s appearance
  • Incontinence

Elastin

Collagen works in tandem with the protein elastin. This helps all of our organs, including our skin, stay flexible. It’s the reason a woman can dilate and stretch during childbirth and return, mostly, to normal position. The same is true during tampon use and after sex. The vaginal canal is often stretched and can normally return to its original shape.

As collagen declines, so does elastin. This causes the vaginal walls to become lax and not keep their shape as easily or readily.

Pregnancy

When we think of vaginal changes, we think of childbirth, but pregnancy has an effect too. When women are pregnant, their estrogen and progesterone levels increase, which increases the amount of discharge they experience.

Blood flow is increased everywhere as the volume of blood increases. This can cause the labia and the vagina to swell and feel fuller. These changes are normal. Keep in mind, the vagina may be in some state of swelling for the entirety of the pregnancy.

Childbirth

There are variations to vaginal childbirth and an assortment of scenarios your vagina may have to endure. To begin with, the cervix dilates. The cervix is a tube, 3 to 4 centimeters in length, that connects to the vagina. While a woman is pregnant, the cervix has to keep the uterus closed, but during labor, it has to stretch to facilitate the baby being delivered.

When the cervix dilates 10 centimeters, delivery can begin. The vagina, skin, and muscles stretch to accommodate the baby as it enters the vagina. Sometimes, the labia and surrounding skin reach their maximum stretching point and your doctor will make an incision enlarging the vaginal opening to prevent tearing, which can also happen.

After Childbirth

Immediately after giving birth, the uterus is the size of a grapefruit but will return to almost its original shape within 6 to 8 weeks. But because of the pressure of the increased blood flow and the stretching of childbirth itself, there can be permanent changes to the vagina. Women often experience a weakening of the vaginal muscles and tissues during this time.

The weakening of this area can lead to decreased sensitivity during intercourse. Mothers can experience mild incontinence and experience an external sagging appearance.

Menopause

Perimenopause brings with it fluctuations in estrogen that can lead to vulvovaginal atrophy. The symptoms of atrophy are the tissues of the vulva and the vaginal lining becoming thinner, losing elasticity and producing less natural lubrication. These symptoms can result in women experiencing pain during intercourse, mild-to-moderate incontinence issues, and feelings of embarrassment about the changing appearance of their genitalia.

Menopause adds to the already uncomfortable loss of laxity, lack of vaginal sensation, and increased difficulty achieving orgasm.

Treatment

It used to be that if a woman was experiencing these symptoms, she would be given band-aid solutions like recommendations to use lubrication and incontinence pads. We’re not saying those aren’t solid pieces of advice in certain situations, but they don’t fix any underlying issues.

The other option was to have invasive surgery, and many of those procedures couldn’t guarantee a successful outcome. It was a lot of risk to take for no guarantee of an upside. Now, women have a choice. There is a non-invasive option that is providing transformative results for women everywhere—ThermiVa.

What Is ThermiVa?

ThermiVa is an innovative vaginal rejuvenation treatment. It’s the first of its kind and offers women a non-invasive treatment to tighten and firm vaginal tissues, both inside and out. For decades, the cosmetic medical world has known about the restorative and rejuvenating powers of radiofrequency energy for tightening skin on the face and neck. Now, that same power can tighten a woman’s vaginal tissue.

This treatment is designed to tighten both the vaginal canal and the outer labia to achieve higher vaginal function and a more pleasing aesthetic. By tightening this tissue, it also treats incontinence, lack of sexual pleasure, and aesthetic self-confidence.

How Does It Work?

ThermiVa uses radiofrequency energy to help tighten vulvovaginal tissue in women who are experiencing laxity in their vaginal canals and stretched and uncomfortable labia. These can result from childbirth, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process. The thermal energy of this treatment targets the underlying layers of vaginal tissue and gently heats it.

It’s this heating of the tissue that results in an immediate contraction of the tissue affected. It’s also this heating that stimulates the body’s healing process. The body naturally increases its production of collagen, and when that happens, a strength to the vaginal canal and muscles returns. It has also been proven to increase a woman’s natural lubrication.

What Can I Expect From Treatment?

Because this is such a sensitive subject, the most important thing is the comfort of the patient from start to finish. Be sure to express any reservations you have with your doctor so they can address them from the beginning and you can relax for the rest of the process.

The Consultation

There is no stigma attached to your areas of concern during the consultation. You’ll feel comfortable and free to discuss all the symptoms you’ve been experiencing. Many clients report feeling a significant amount of relief by just vocalizing what they’ve been experiencing and hearing that, while their symptoms are normal, they don’t have to live with them.

You and your doctor will discuss your symptoms and areas of concern and go over a brief health history. Once you and your doctor have decided this is the right treatment to address your concerns and get the results you desire, you’ll make an appointment. There is no preparation for you to do because this is a non-invasive treatment.

During Your Treatment Session

Your feelings of safety and comfort are the priority. This is a sensitive treatment, and you’ll feel nothing but relaxed. ThermiVa is a quick, in-office treatment and will be done with a nurse present. All you have to do is relax.

Just before treatment, an ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area. This allows the treatment wand to comfortably and easily move throughout treatment. Your doctor will talk you through every step of the treatment so you’re comfortable and aware of what’s happening with your body at all times.

External Treatment

During an external treatment, the wand will slowly and precisely pass the wand over your vulvar areas and labia. This will trigger these areas to immediately constrict the tissue and tighten it. Collagen production will be triggered for longer-term results.

Internal Treatment

The wand, minimally wider than a finger, will be inserted into your vagina to target the internal tissues. They, too, will be constricted, causing an immediate tightening effect. Within the walls of the vagina, collagen production will be triggered to thicken the tissue and increase blood flow to the area.

Most patients describe the sensation of treatment as a warm and comfortable process while the radiofrequency energy is applied. Each session lasts about 45 minutes. There is no downtime after this treatment, and you can get right back to your normal routines, including sexual activities.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It’s recommended that clients plan on three treatments to achieve optimal results. Some clients may be thrilled with the results they get from just one or two. It all depends on the condition of the tissue, the stage of life of the patient, and how they respond to treatment. Each patient is different, and your doctor can recommend the right number of treatments to help you achieve the results you’re looking for.

When Will I See Results?

There will be the immediate constriction of the tissue that will give you mild results. The real results come as your body increases its production of collagen and elastin in the vaginal tissue. Another component of healthy skin gets produced as collagen increases—hyaluronic acid.

This is a naturally produced sugar that keeps connective tissues and our skin naturally lubricated. It attracts and retains moisture, helping women regain their natural lubrication. In a few days, you’ll notice results get better, and those results will continue to improve over the next few weeks.

How Long Do Results Last?

Your body will continue to age after treatment. Optimal results last up to a year or more. If you work with your doctor about a maintenance treatment schedule, you may be able to enjoy seamless results.

There are some things you can do to prolong your results:

  • Kegel exercises daily
  • Refrain from smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Have more sex! It increases blood flow to the area

Is ThermiVa Right for Me?

Only your doctor can determine if this is the right treatment for you, though there are some questions you can ask yourself to open the conversation with your physician:

  • Has sex become less enjoyable for me?
  • Do I feel not as tight as I used to before having kids?
  • Do I leak or dribble urine when I laugh, sneeze or engage in physical activity?
  • Do I have a more difficult time achieving orgasm?
  • Am I experiencing more vaginal dryness than is comfortable?
  • Do I feel self-conscious about the way my vagina looks?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, no matter what your age, talk to your doctor about this treatment.

What Women Are Saying

There’s no better testament to a treatment designed only for women than to hear how actual women feel after receiving it. Clients rave about their results, and not just the physical ones. They feel less self-conscious, are enjoying sex more, and feel less nervous about bladder leakage in a social situation.

Here are other things women have to say about this life-changing treatment:

  • 100% of women say this treatment was “worth it”
  • Women can wait longer in between bathroom visits and can “hold it” longer
  • Women achieve orgasm easier and faster
  • They feel proud of their body again
  • They feel more like themselves

Beware DIY Remedies

If you peruse social media, you’ll see many cheaper DIY treatments for home use. Unless a physician or medical professional is administering treatment, it’s risky to insert an unknown object into your vagina for “medical purposes”. The best option is always to consult with your doctor before trusting your vaginal health to a mail kit or any other treatment.
